Colette Miller Collaborative Inspiration
Another way to incorporate the street art-graffiti tour into your curriculum is to choose an artist that the students got to see their work up close and personal to use as inspiration. One such artist that we saw, and that you may have seen yourself and taken a picture with her interactive art piece, is Colette Miller’s angel wings. You can find several of these wings in the art’s district and around LA.

On our tour, this was a popular stop for the students to take pictures and a much needed break from all of our walking.

Once we returned to school, I used this as inspiration for a collaborative art project for the entire school to use for the art show. Every student was given a feather to draw, color, and cut out (younger students were given help with cutting so that the final piece could be uniform).

Students were encouraged to be creative allowing them to complete their feather however they wanted. They could draw images, add only color, make them black and white. When all were complete, myself and a few students organized the final wings based on similar colors and designs.

Once our collaborative installation was up, we made it the first part of the art show and added a hashtag so that students and family members could share their photos to the schools social media.
